K-W Daytimers Hockey Club Inc. History

About the Organization

In early 2004, Paul Paleczny along with David Henry, Art Weis, and Garnet Foster recruited the first 22 plus players. While the City of Waterloo was initially asked for 2 hours of weekly daytime ice, the City called a meeting at City Hall with 8 staff and requested that we start a senior men’s league at RIM Park. We chose to play at the WMRC instead of RIM Park because it is a more central location for our players and has dressing rooms large enough to accommodate 2 teams together.
After much discussion, the” K-W Daytimers Hockey Club” was the name of this new venture. Each ice time has different color sweaters allowing players to play on specific teams week to week and even year to year.

We now have 150 regular players plus another 50 active pool players playing 5 days per week. The group was incorporated and became the” K-W Daytimers Hockey Club Inc” in November 2016. We do not draft the players each season. Each group remains together each season and the comradery that has developed within each group is a major part of our enjoyment of the “Daytimers “hockey experience. Our social committee organizes an annual Christmas lunch with keynote speakers and a May golf day where we all get together and trade great hockey, fishing and golf stories.

We play a 50 minute morning game with no referees and two lines. Our MWF groups play 78 games and our Tue/Thurs. groups play 52 games. The cost per game is about ½ the price of a night league. We also have a co-insurance program in place to provide refunds to injured or ill players. All of the captains and player managers do a very conscientious job in managing their group of players in order to ice 20 players and 2 goalies for each game.

The K-W Daytimers have been active in the community and in 2014, we were honored by the City of Kitchener, Mayor Carl Zehr at a Salute to Seniors, in recognition of our participation and involvement in our community. In 2017, we were honored by Waterloo Mayor, Dave Jaworsky in recognition of our volunteer work in the community with the K-W Daytmers Hockey Club Inc. The Rotary Club of Kitchener-Conestoga and House of friendship has thanked us for our participation in their Christmas Hamper Project over several years,
